Thurston Fast Facts
- Founded in 1981, the Thurston Arthritis Research Center is part of the UNC School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- Our mission statement: To investigate the causes, consequences and treatments of arthritis and autoimmune diseases, and to reduce their impact on patients, their families and society.
- 18 primary and 50 secondary faculty members and more than 70 physicians and researchers from 17 different departments in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and Dentistry.
- Designated as a Center of Excellence in Clinical Immunology.
- Designated as a Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center (MCRC.)
- Research focus on the biological mechanisms as well as the psychological and social impacts of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, lupus, and fibromyalgia.
- Lead collaborator in the development of The North Carolina Arthritis Program and participating organization in development of The National Arthritis Action Plan.
- A major contributor to the Top 10 Arthritis Advances by the Arthritis Foundation.
- Ranks among the nation's top arthritis centers in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC.)
