About Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its namesake share a mutually beneficial bond. UNC may be considered the primary attraction in Chapel Hill but the city itself can lay claim to its own merits.

Selected by TIME Magazine as one of America's best places to live, and named "the best college town in America" in a national survey of American public universities, Chapel Hill is more than a geographic location, it is the perfect complement to the University atmosphere. Though the population numbers only 40,000, Chapel Hill achieves the perfect balance of small town charm and cosmopolitan savvy.

The rolling hills and tree-lined avenues are home to such cultural attractions as the Playmakers Repertory Company, as well as places for outdoor enthusiasts, like the 65-acre Cedar Falls Park, nearby Duke Forest or The Chapel Hill Tennis Club.

Nationally acclaimed sporting events are just around the corner at the Dean E. Smith Center and Kenan Stadium. One can take in a Carolina Hurricanes NHL game in nearby Raleigh, see the 2002 Founder's Cup Champion Carolina Courage game in SAS Stadium, and visit Durham to see the 2002 International League AAA Champion Durham Bulls play baseball. Along with being the home of the Carolina Hurricanes the RBC Center is host to shows ranging from rock concerts to world famous circuses.

UNC also boasts the Ackland Museum of Art, and, in Raleigh, the North Carolina Museums of Art and Natural History host nationally acclaimed exhibits. For those who yearn for weekend jaunts, Chapel Hill is ideally located three hours from both the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, and five hours south of Washington, D.C.
